1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

14th April 1471: The Battle of Barnet

In this decisive battle of the Wars Of The Roses, the brief restoration in fortune of the House of Lancaster, brought about by the defection of the Duke of Warwick, was brought to an end and secured the rule of Edward IV until his death in 1483.

The battle began in a thick fog at dawn. While the main forces were heavily engaged, the Earl of Oxford and his Lancastrian troops routed a Yorkist batallion under Lord William Hastings, chasing them up to Barnet. On their return to the battlefield, Oxford's men were erroneously shot at by his allies commanded by John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu. The Lancastrians lost the battle as cries of treason spread through their line and many abandoned the fight. While retreating, Warwick was killed.

As brilliant a commander as Edward was, Warwick was equally talented and had taught Edward everything he knew about battle tactics. The Lancastrians were ultimately defeated because of lack of cohesion - they were an uneasy alliance of loyal Lancastrians and the turncoat Nevilles (Warwick and his brother) and the quite literal "fog of battle" worked against them.

Edward had no time to rest however. Queen Margaret, wife of Henry VI and the true power at the head of the House of Lancaster, landed at Weymouth the same day. She however was subsequently defeated at Tewkesbury, and the House of York was secure until Edward's unexpected sudden death in 1483.

In a strange twist of fate, the noble to outlive all the other participants at Barnet was the Lancastrian Earl of Oxford, who fled to France, subsequently escaped capture, then led the victorious Lancastrian army for Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I enjoy and I'm very grateful for technology - it has played a major role in Enlightenment. However the downside of this is the dependence it has created. My Practice would not attract clients without it, and I could not fulfil my life purpose anything like as effectively. Furthermore, any glitch buggers up my day.

For example, a program has suddenly started gobbling half my CPU capacity, making the laptop run hot. My "prime suspect" is Windows Updater, which also started to freeze when downloading updates, so I have disabled it to see if that fixes the problem. My suspicions were aroused further when the Updater Fix Wizard also froze! I can't be sure because it's one of several programs that access the CPU indirectly by the Windows svchost.exe command.

This is the thing with computers - fixing the glitch is easy - it's FINDING THE CAUSE OF THE GLITCH where Windows is decidedly unhelpful. It's all trial and error that consumes time I have better things to do with!

9. ZEN WISDOM
To feel fear and carry on regardless - that is the root of true happiness. To move forward resolutely regardless of what lies in store - that is the spirit, the resolve, that leads to human victory.
