1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

9th March 1946:
The Burden Park Disaster
The Burnden Park disaster was a human crush that occurred on 9 March 1946 at Burnden Park football stadium, then the home of Bolton Wanderers. The crush resulted in the deaths of 33 people and injuries to hundreds of Bolton fans. It was the deadliest stadium-related disaster in British history until the Ibrox Park disaster in 1971.

Shortly after the game started, the crowd began spilling onto the pitch and the game was temporarily stopped as the pitch was cleared. However, at this time, two barriers collapsed and the crowd fell forward, crushing those underneath. The game was restarted but was quickly halted again when a police officer came onto the pitch to speak to the referee, George Dutton, to inform him there had been a fatality. He, in turn, called the two captains, Bolton's Harry Hubbick and Stoke's Neil Franklin, together to inform them and the players left the pitch.

The dead and injured were taken from the railway end terrace, with those who had perished lain along the touchline and covered in coats. A little under half an hour after leaving the pitch, the game was restarted, with a new sawdust lined touchline separating the players from the bodies. At the end of the first-half, the players immediately changed ends and started the second half. Stanley Matthews was on the Stoke team, and later said he was sickened that the game was allowed to continue.

The match, an FA Cup Sixth Round second-leg tie between Bolton and Stoke City, was allowed to continue, with the game ending goalless. The disaster brought about the Moelwyn Hughes report, which recommended more rigorous control of crowd sizes.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Sleep patterns continue to be unreliable! By 22:00 last night I was suitably sleepy, but at 02:30 an accursed urine boner got me up and then after that I slept only very fitfully. "Indulging" overnight boners doesn't work by the way. You just get very sweaty, will take a long time if you "finish" at all and sleep no better!

I'm in need of a new strategy to respond to this relatively new symptom of ageing. It's a case of therapist heal thyself, so I'll be trying out a variety of strategies to combat this new unwanted phenomenon.

In more encouraging news, I am doing very well living by intuition. As the weekend proved, I'm still vulnerable but recovery is rapid and my Grounding technique has also improved. I now need to build on this success to tackle a snacking habit and aforesaid sleep issue. My experience is that once your focus is on it, you can crack it.

8. TRIVIA
Everyone is a minority in Hawaii—there are no racial majorities. Haoles or Caucasians, constitute about 33% of the population, Japanese about 33%, Filipino-Americans about 16%, and Chinese-Americans about 5%. Most of the population has mixed ethnicities.

9. ZEN WISDOM
As we work for the greater good on our own terms, we build happiness for ourselves and others. The more we do for other people, the more the path of our own happiness will open up. In realizing this, we discover a sense of gratitude in being able to help them.
