1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

22nd March 1963:
The release of PLEASE PLEASE ME
Please Please Me is the debut studio album by the The Beatles. Parlophone rush-released the album on 22 March 1963 in the United Kingdom to capitalise on the success of the singles "Please Please Me" (No. 1 on most lists)  and "Love Me Do" (No. 17).

Of the album's 14 songs, eight were written by Lennon–McCartney (originally credited "McCartney–Lennon"). In 2012, Please Please Me was voted 39th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

With Parlophone, the band's record company, running on a shoestring budget, Only a morning and afternoon was booked to record the album, on 11th February 1963. It was clear this wasn't going to be long enough, despite the fact that four tracks were already recorded for the singles, so the evening session was added.

On the day of the recording,  John Lennon had a very heavy common cold, but just had to continue. The band barreled through 11 songs (one, "Hold Me Tight", was not used and re-recorded on "With The Beatles").

The band did not have an 11th track prepared, so during a recording break, a discussion ensued as to what song to cover. On the suggestion of a visiting journalist, the band decided on the Isley Brother's "Twist And Shout". Only Lennon had the vocal range for the song, and the effort put his already-suffering voice out of action for several weeks.

The album was a massive success. By May it was #1 in the UK album charts and remained there for 30 weeks, finally being replaced by follow-up album "With The Beatles". The album initiated a seismic shift in album sales. Previously dominated by film soundtracks and easy-listening vocalists, pop and subsequently rock groups became the predominant "big-sellers".

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
It's not often Missus comes back from work stressed, but yesterday was one of those days. I threw money at the problem - fish n chips for all. A somewhat expensive option these days, it nevertheless did the trick. Missus recovered quickly, and learning from Sunday, ignored ex-Daughter's telephone harassment until Quality Time was over. It also had the added bonus of clearing the kitchen quickly so I could focus on clients.

It's going to be an expensive week in general - posting Missus' Easter chocs, buying her (and Son!) monster eggs, more Viagra and a calcium supplement for Missus. I've a day with plenty to do, but that's no bad thing, if only income was more abundant!

Internally, though I am vulnerable, by baseline mindstate is calm gratitude. My mental health has never been stronger! I have a clear purpose, an agenda to defend and a readiness to meet challenges.

8. TRIVIA
The Boxer Rebellion between 1898 and 1901 in northern China was against Christian missionaries, foreign diplomats, and technology by a secret group called the “Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists” (Yihequan or I-ho-ch’uan) so named because its members practiced weaponless martial arts as well as secret rituals. Westerners called it “shadow boxing” and the members “Boxers.”
