The Battle of Torrington
The battle was the last in the West Country during the English Civil War. After Lord Wentworth's defeat at Bovey Tracey, Sir Ralph Hopton was appointed Royalist commander in the west, with Wentworth commanding the cavalry and Sir Richard Grenville the infantry. Grenville however refused to recognize Hopton's command and was arrested for insubordination and imprisoned on St Michael's Mount.
Hopton's army numbered only 2,000 Cornish infantry and 3,000 cavalry but nevertheless advanced into Devon and occupied Torrington, where defensive works were thrown up. The Parliamentarians approached from the east on the evening of 16 February 1646. In heavy rain and with night falling, they ran into Royalist dragoons and fighting broke out to the east of Torrington. The Parliamentary commander, Sir Thomas Fairfax, decided to wait until morning to reconnoitre the Royalists' defences. However, when he sent his dragoons forward to test the defences, they came under fire, so Fairfax pushed more troops forward in support and a full battle commenced.
The fighting at the barricades lasted two hours, then the Cornish infantry crumbled and retreated into the town, where bitter fighting continued. A stray spark ignited the Royalist magazine in Torrington church, where eighty barrels of gunpowder were stored. The explosion destroyed the church, killed all the prisoners held there and narrowly missed killing Fairfax.
The loss of all their gunpowder effectively ended Royalist resistance and the surviving Royalist troops fled. On 14th March, the remainder of Hopton's army surrendered, and Exeter, the last Royalist stronghold in the West Country, fell on 13th April. After all remaining Royalist strongholds fell except Harlech, Charles himself surrendered on the 5th May. Harlech held out until 13th March 1647.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I find myself in very calm state with my subconscious getting on with things and my consciousness simply observing it all gratefully. I have learned that consciousness only really has one power - to focus. However, whatever one is focused on, the whole bodymind swings behind. Learn how to be calm, grateful and focused on your goals at the same time, and you will achieve those goals.
Consciousness however is undermined if the primal needs are not met, so putting in the body maintenance is a crucial investment of time. I am currently enjoying the HUM. Consciousness itself emits a vibration, and when your mind is quiet, you can feel it, and it's truly DELICIOUS, like a vibrator stimulating not your genitals but your whole being.
I feel immensely privileged - very few people will ever be able to make their minds calm enough or have circumstances benign enough to have this experience.
