1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

11th January 1919

Romania acquires Transylvania
Transylvania is a large plateau surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. Many different races held it or migrated across it during the Dark Ages, but by the 11th Century it was ruled by Hungary. Over the next few centuries there was significant migration into the region, particularly by Romanians.

After the Battle of Mohacs in 1526, Hungary lost control of the region and it became an autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire - the Turks were never able to dominate the area. From 1683, Transylvania was effectively taken over by the Austrian Habsburg empire.

After World War 1 and the end of the Habsburg empire, the ethnic Romanian majority were able to seize control and proclaim union with Romania. Romania formally took over the region on the 11th January 1919, but it was not internationally ratified until the Treaty of Trianon in 1920.

This was not the end of the dispute regarding Transylvania - a significant minority of Hungarians now found themselves ruled by a foreign country. In 1940 in a Nazi-brokered peace deal known as the "Vienna Award", Northern Transylvania was returned to Hungary, but in 1945 this was declared null and void and Romania has since retained full sovereignty over the whole of Transylvania.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Pearl Wedding Anniversary today. Married for 30 years! I find myself in the odd position of never being happier despite the fact that my wife is clinically psychotic and I am a full-time carer. What makes all the difference is that she holds down a job, enabling me to look after her, and faithfully takes her medication, so she does not become aggressively paranoid, and she utterly worships me. I very much enjoy being worshipped, and couple that with the space and freedom I have, untypical of a husband, and with no mortgage to pay, this all adds up to Shangri-La.

I am not one who requires or desires vast amounts of bling and status symbols, just primal needs met, a few creature comforts, somewhere to live that's comfortable and free of predators and tormentors, and the tools to make a difference my way. I have all this! My goal is simply more of the same!

Of course, effort is required to maintain it - it doesn't maintain itself! As well as housekeeping, Missus needs to be gently managed to prevent hoarding, unassertiveness, compulsive bingeing, and nail-picking and delusions to ruining her life. It will be much more preferable if I outlive her, as in every way she cannot cope without me.

I have the environment in which to thrive and pass on my memes, and for this I am most profoundly grateful!

8. TRIVIA
Penguins can drink salt water because they have a special gland, the supraorbital gland, that filters salt from the bloodstream.

9. ZEN WISDOM
It is important to keep the promises made to friends. This is the true meaning of friendship. To become people who can do so, however, we must first learn to keep the promises we have made to ourselves.
