1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

3rd November 1957
Sputnik 2 is launched
Sputnik 2 was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, on 3 November 1957, and the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika.

Laika was selected from ten candidates at the Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine, because of her even temperament. She weighed about 6 kg (13 lb). The pressurized cabin on Sputnik 2 allowed enough room for her to lie down or stand and was padded. An air regeneration system provided oxygen; food and water were dispensed in a gelatinized form. Laika was chained in place and fitted with a harness, a bag to collect waste, and electrodes to monitor vital signs.

Early telemetry indicated Laika was agitated but alive and well, though the cabin temperature had already reached 43 °C (109 °F) by the third orbit. Biometric telemetry failed sometime after the fourth orbit. While it was initially claimed that Laika had survived in orbit for a week, decades later Russian sources revealed that Laika likely lived only a few hours in orbit before dying from overheating. The mission provided scientists with the first data on the behavior of a living organism in the space environment.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I'm not sure what brought it on, but I had a sweet and chocolate binge last night, and I'm not feeling particularly guilty about it! It was MARVELLOUS!! This is probably because I have been on reduced sugar nutrition for some time and the intense sensual sugar hit verged on ecstasy! However, this does not add up to a relapse into compulsive eating, and discipline will return today. Having "got it out of my system" I will feel no urge to repeat the experience for some time.

On the subject of urges I have not had any sexual activity for some time, and I have not missed it at all! In younger days I would be "climbing the walls" by now. This inactivity has been brought about by a combination of Missus being "out of action" due to her painful knee and a lack of privacy. I could have sneakily cracked off a crafty one if I really wanted, but with no libido it seemed too much like hard work!

These two examples of overindulgence on one hand and underindulgence on the other are not lethal in the short term, but not good for my wellbeing in the long term. It would for a start be rank hypocrisy, and secondly sugar is so bad for you long term and a good regular cum the opposite that a return to dietary discipline and sexual activity are musts.

I'm in a very privileged position in that I generally live with my actions unchallenged and free of scrutiny. This leads to a very happy low-stress experience, but it is essential to therefore challenge myself because no stress is as bad as no stress. For the happiness and wellbeing I enjoy to continue, I need to keep alert for threats both external and internal within myself and pursue clearly defined goals.

A day or two of letting oneself go is immensely enjoyable, but obeys the law of diminishing returns. Long term joy comes from making a difference, which requires routines, structures and self-discipline.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU
Is what you're doing getting you anywhere?

Another dull and damp day with mist and fog lingering for much of the day. It could be dense at first which may lead to some disruption on transport. Where the fog does lift it will remain cloudy. Rain arriving in the evening will be heavy at times and dense fog will return thereafter.

6. TODAY'S ONELINER
Women spend more time wondering what men are thinking than men spend thinking :D

7. NOW THAT'S FUNNY!

8. TRIVIA
Ramses II (1279-1212 B.C.) is often considered the greatest pharaoh (“great house”) of the Egyptian empire. He ruled Egypt for 60 years and was the only pharaoh to carry the title “the Great” after his name. He had over 90 children: approximately 56 boys and 44 girls. He had eight official wives and nearly 100 concubines. He also had red hair, which was associated with the god Seth.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Suffering is the fuel of wisdom, and it opens the way to happiness. Through illness, human beings can gain insight into the meaning of life, understand its value and dignity, and strive to lead more fulfilling lives.
