1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1st November 1512
The Sistine Chapel opens to the public
The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, one of Italian artist Michelangelo’s finest works, is exhibited to the public for the first time.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, the greatest of the Italian Renaissance artists, was born in the small village of Caprese in 1475. The son of a government administrator, he grew up in Florence, a center of the early Renaissance movement, and became an artist’s apprentice at age 13. Demonstrating obvious talent, he was taken under the wing of Lorenzo de’ Medici, the ruler of the Florentine republic and a great patron of the arts. After demonstrating his mastery of sculpture in such works as the Pieta (1498) and David (1504), he was called to Rome in 1508 to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel—the chief consecrated space in the Vatican.

Michelangelo’s epic ceiling frescoes, which took several years to complete, are among his most memorable works. Central in a complex system of decoration featuring numerous figures are nine panels devoted to biblical world history. The most famous of these is The Creation of Adam, a painting in which the arms of God and Adam are stretching toward each other. In 1512, Michelangelo completed the work.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
The Weekend Job went smoothly as it usually does these days. The recent changes there, like replacing managers with team leaders and the carrier bag charge has greatly reduce the causes of conflict. This is not the case for many folks there. My sympathy for them though is muted because they're all mugs who allow themselves to be exploited, meaning that the stroppy ones like myself get treated far better.

Higher Consciousness views the situation there with its keen interest in psychology. The people there who voluntarily choose to have a hard time do so simply because they don't believe things could be better, and frankly they are cowards, not wanting to take any risks. Plenty moan about things, only a few have the courage to take a stand against them.

However, this does not mean I feel contempt - ultimately it's all just Physics. I myself was a coward until circumstances gave me the time and space to think and understand. What I now realize is that everyone has a personal agenda that is usually at odds with the collective interest. Furthermore, if you want to be happy, you require the courage to fight for and defend your own agenda or otherwise you become a servant to the agenda of others.

Your agenda may be positive and benevolent, such as to make a difference, but you need to fight to make the difference you want to make in your way, defending it from the agenda of others. As my awareness as shifted, I have become increasingly individualist in philosophy, prepared to forge alliances for mutual benefit but I utterly reject collective causes that champion fantasy ideals that could never actually exist because of the personal agendas of the individuals.

Oneness does not in any case have to be fought for - it already exists. Everything is ultimately one thing having an infinity of experience. This character, and its agenda, is a very temporary mortal thing, its purpose being simply to contribute to the overall experience. This understanding has led to this character having the greatest experience that life has to offer - peace of mind.

A dull start with low cloud and locally dense fog patches. This will be slow to clear, with some places remaining cloudy and rather chilly for much of the day. Some warm sunny spells where the cloud does break though.
Overnight will remain dry with negligible wind. Low cloud, mist and fog patches will readily re-form with the fog dense in places.

8. TRIVIA
Six billion steps of DNA are contained in a single cell. This DNA can be stretched six feet, but it is coiled up in the cell’s nucleus, which measures only 1/2500 of an inch in diameter.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Courage and compassion are two sides of the same coin. Compassion without courage is not genuine. You may have a compassionate thought or impulse, but if you don’t do or say anything, it’s not real compassion.
