1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

11th November 1778
The Cherry Valley Massacre

On this day in 1778, during the American War of Independence, Patriot Colonel Ichabod Alden refused to believe intelligence from friendly Native Americans about an approaching hostile force.

Alden was in command of the 7th Massachusetts Regiment in Cherry Valley, New York, where he proved to be tragically militarily incompetent in a state deeply divided between Loyalists and Patriots and with a significant hostile Native American presence. His force of no more than 300 men were hopelessly inadequate.

The Patriot force was consequently taken by surprise, and a combined force of 200 Loyalists commanded by Major Walter Butler and 600 aggrieved Iroquois Native Americans under Chief Joseph Brant, attacking in the snow, killed more than 40 Patriots, including Alden, and took at least an additional 70 prisoners, in what is known today as the Cherry Valley Massacre. The attack took place east of Cooperstown, New York, in what is now Otsego County.

Due to the relatively small numbers involved on both sides, the battle was not decisive and the outcome of the war was decided elsewhere. However one direct consequence was the vengeful 1779 Patriot Sullivan Expedition which eradicated 40 Iroquois villages in New York State.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Missus health continues to cause concern. She reports her knee showing a slight improvement but has now developed nausea. She is off the the doc's again today to discuss the next move. It's all kinda frustrating. The NHS is great for critical care, but I don't have a great deal of faith in it regarding long-term chronic ailments - not that I can do anything about it. I can only respond to developments, which I will therefore do.

However, despite the long-term issues, in the short term, current circumstances have been beneficial in time-abundance. Sleep patterns have shifted. The previous two days, my brain has demanded - and got - a two-hour nap in the middle of the day and last night demanded and got an early night, so I got a full 7 hours sleep.

A consequence of Enlightenment is being fully aware, and it's all utterly fascinating observing my own internal changes as I age, as well as the rest of the universe beyond, and watching my perception of time accelerate to breakneck speed.

I am currently in "enjoy the movie" mode. This character has already successfully passed on both genes and memes, so all further contributions are a bonus. That said, my presence is still critical to Son and Missus, so I will enjoy continuing to play this support role.

7. NOW THAT'S FUNNY!

8. TRIVIA
An elephant can urinate more than 13 gallons per day. It’s easier to measure this on a male elephant, as female elephants often poop and urinate at the same time.

9. ZEN WISDOM
One thing is certain: That is that the power of belief, the power of thought, will move reality in the direction of what we believe and conceive of it. If you really believe you can do something, you can.
