2nd November 1917
The Balfour Declaration
The Balfour Declaration (dated 2 November 1917) was a letter from the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland.

His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

The text of the letter was published in the press one week later, on 9 November 1917. The "Balfour Declaration" was later incorporated into both the Sèvres peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire, and the Mandate for Palestine. The original document is kept at the British Library.

The Middle East conflict had its roots in this declaration, because the British had now made conflicting promises to Jews and Arabs regarding Palestine. The declaration was in contrast to the McMahon-Hussein correspondence, which promised the Arab independence movement control of the Middle East territories "in the limits and boundaries proposed by the Sheriff of Mecca" in exchange for revolting against the Ottoman Empire.

In their narrow focus on winning the war against the Central Powers, Britain had sowed the seed for a much longer conflict equally as serious that would firstly provide a significant unwanted distraction for the British in World War 2 where both Jews and Arabs would attack them, then a Jewish-Arab conflict that would afflict the world to this day.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Another week begins when I have the other two "under my feet" - I have to say that I hardly suffered last week - in fact if anything I got a little more "me time" as I had no clients and I wasn't running to the usual timetable. 

My chief concern at the moment is Missus' knee. If the doctors are right and it's simply ligament damage from a twist, it's just a question of time. I however disagree with them! After a week's rest I would have expected some improvement - there was none. If it is as I suspect something else, we are now going to have a fortnight where Missus will simply be in a painful limbo just to convince our GP's it really is serious. 

If money were no object, I would have it scanned privately and in the event of a problem discovered, sue the NHS for recovery of the layout, which is a whopping £535. Unfortunately I simply cannot afford to gamble firstly that I'm right and secondly that I'd win a lawsuit. 

If it turns out to be osteoarthritis, there's no cure anyway - only management. We certainly don't have the cash for a private knee replacement every ten years. The NHS will only replace it if it can't be walked on at all or if you're 70+. 

Having thus determined that there's no escape from this "wait and see" limbo, we will just have to get on with it - even when there's few clients, there's still plenty to be getting on with, so this character will get on with changing what he can actually change.
