1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

13th November 1002
The St. Brice's Day Massacre

A genocide of Danes living in England, ordered by Ethelred II (The Unready) occurred this day on the 13th November 1002.

Danes had been settling in England for over a century following the viking invasions. The vikings had never fully conquered England and their further conquest had been halted by Alfred The Great (871-899). By 954 The Saxons had regained control of all England, leaving a large Danish minority under their rule. From 997 however, viking raids had re-started and many viewed the settled Danes as the "enemy within"

The massacre did not occur in the majority Danish areas of the former Danelaw, such as York and Lincoln, but in Saxon areas with Danish minorities, such as Oxford and Bristol and was an early case of "state-sponsored racial hatred"

The massacre probably helped provoke the Danish invasion of Sweyn in 1003, and Ethelred had to fight Danish invasions for the remainder of his reign.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Sleep patterns returned to something like normal after recent unprompted odd behaviour. I awoke around 02:40 convinced it was time to wake up, but after a wee returned effortlessly to sleep until 05:30, a reasonable hour for a morning person like me, and after a good 6 hours.

Missus, bless her, had an upsetting "daymare" about losing me - the future is of course not guaranteed to anyone, but I got her to refocus on the moment, and suitably comforted, she went to sleep happy.

I shall remember this last couple of weeks as the fortnight of disrupted sleep, where sleep patterns were all over the place. I attribute this to stress being too LOW - no formal structure to the days. With Missus returning to work on Monday, I expect the return of routine to induce the return of consistent sleeping.

7. NOW THAT'S FUNNY!

8. TRIVIA
It would take 800 marijuana joints to kill a person—and the cause of death would be carbon monoxide poisoning. This does not mean smoking cannabis is harmless, but all its damaging effects, like smoking tobacco, are long-term, unlike alcohol that through overindulgence can kill you in a single binge.

9. ZEN WISDOM
“Dig beneath your feet, there you will find a spring.” The place where you are now is crucial. Never try to avoid that which you must do right now.
