1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

26th October 1881
The Gunfight At The OK Corral
The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a 30-second gunfight between outlaw Cowboys and lawmen that is generally regarded as the most famous shootout in the history of the American Wild West. The gunfight took place at about 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. It was the result of a long-simmering feud between Cowboys Billy Claiborne, Ike and Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury, and opposing lawmen: town Marshal Virgil Earp, Assistant Town Marshal Morgan Earp, and temporary deputy marshals Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Billy Clanton and both McLaury brothers were killed. Ike Clanton, who had repeatedly threatened to kill the Earps, claimed he was unarmed and ran from the fight along with Billy Claiborne. Virgil, Morgan, and Doc Holliday were wounded, but Wyatt Earp was unharmed.

Despite its name, the historic gunfight did not take place within or next door to the O.K. Corral which fronted on Allen Street and had a rear entrance on Fremont Street. The shootout actually took place in a narrow lot on the side of C. S. Fly's Photographic Studio on Fremont Street, six doors west of the O.K. Corral's rear entrance. Some members of the two opposing parties were initially only about 6 feet (1.8 m) apart. About thirty shots were fired in thirty seconds. Ike Clanton, whose brother Billy had been killed, filed murder charges against the Earps and Doc Holliday. The lawmen were eventually exonerated by a local Justice of the Peace after a 30-day preliminary hearing, and then by a local grand jury.

The gunfight was not the end of the conflict, and on December 28, 1881, Virgil Earp was ambushed and left with a crippled left arm in a murder attempt by the outlaw Cowboys. On March 18, 1882, Cowboys fired from a dark alley through the glass door of a saloon and shot Morgan Earp, killing him. The suspects in both incidents furnished alibis supplied by fellow Cowboys and were not indicted for the crime. Wyatt Earp, newly appointed as Deputy U.S. Marshal in the territory, took matters into his own hands in a personal vendetta, and formed a posse to hunt them down. This was an act beyond his authority, and he was himself pursued by county Sheriff Johnny Behan, who had received a Tucson warrant for Earp's shooting of Frank Stilwell.

Behan however never caught up with Earp's posse, which killed four men—Frank Stilwell, Curly Bill, Indian Charlie, and Johnny Barnes—in their two-week-long ride. Having settled the vendetta, the Earp party left the Arizona Territory and headed east into New Mexico Territory and then into Colorado. Earp did not however find Ike Clanton, who was shot dead in 1887 by lawman Jonas V. Brighton whilst attempting to escape arrest for cattle rustling.

Earp went on to have many more adventures elelsewhere, most notably in Dodge City, before finally settling down in Los Angeles, where he died in 1929, aged 80.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Half-term has crept up on me and so for this week I will have Son and Missus "under my feet". Of some concern is Missus who has developed a painful knee. In typical NHS fashion, she has been given an anti-inflammatory and been told to see what happens. This of course treats the symptoms not the problem - what she has effectively been told is "go away and let's hope it clears up by itself". To me this is wasting time in the hope of saving money and that the problem will go away.

Today I will investigate the possibility of having the knee scanned privately. We cannot afford this of course, but I have the policy of not compromising wellbeing on the grounds of cost.

Between bouts of caring for Missus, I will continue to pursue my spiritual goal of internal silence and intuitive-led decision-making, and general flogging of my wares. I shall pursue all this with gratitude and relentless persistence!
