1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

9th September 1739
THE STONO REBELLION
A major slave revolt began in the American colony of South Carolina. The initial band of 20 swelled to around 80 and they headed south from the Stono river towards Spanish Florida, which was promising asylum to slaves of the British. They were intercepted by the local militia, and after two pitched battles the rebellion was crushed. Most of the rebels were executed, but some were re-sold in the West Indies.

In response to the rebellion, the South Carolina legislature passed the Negro Act of 1740 restricting slave assembly, education, and movement. It also enacted a 10-year moratorium against importing African slaves, and established penalties against slaveholders' harsh treatment of slaves. In addition, it required legislative approval for manumissions (the freeing of slaves), which slaveholders had previously been able to arrange privately.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I suppose I ought to feel bad about depriving myself of all but three hours sleep last night engaged in trivial pursuits, but I don't - I enjoyed it immensely! I felt like I was truly living life, and I feel GOOD! I feel much more bad about Monday night's "row over nothing" so I was particularly mindful around Son and Missus yesterday. This paid off - it was back to the normal loving environment - lesson learned about mindfulness - it's an interpersonal as well as internal discipline.

Though starting brightly enough, I'm aware of a hefty "sleep debt" I'm going to have to pay off at some point soon. With Wednesday busy, it will have to be Thursday afternoon.

Though consciousness these days is playing the character rather than being it, that doesn't make the character trivial. The character and his experience is the "sensory organ" through which consciousness experiences itself. A particularly exquisite experience is during meditation when consciousness concentrated within the character feels itself. The mind goes completely quiet and the feeling is utterly delicious!

I am aware of the need to take every opportunity to heighten my consciousness in quiet undistracted times so I can be more mindful and robust in less benign circumstances

8. TRIVIA
In Australia it is valid protocol to serve court notices to defendants on Facebook. A summons posted on Facebook is legally binding.

9. ZEN WISDOM
People who can admire true greatness are happy people. By opening wide the doors of our hearts we can broaden our own horizons and strengthen our belief in life. A breakdown in this capacity to praise and respect others can lead to inflexibility, bitterness, resentment and self-righteousness.
