1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

22nd September 1862
THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
US President Abraham Lincoln declared the freedom of all slaves in rebel states effective from January 1 1863. Being a US Presidential decree, Congress had the right to challenge it, but never did. The American Civil War was in progress and anything that destabilized the rebel southern states was considered useful. It certainly had the desired effect - slaves deserted Southern plantations en masse and headed for Federal lines.

The civil war began not as a slavery issue for the north but the preservation of the union and the protection of federal assets in the south. However, when it became clear that there was going to be no quick victory, and under intense pressure from the Abolitionist Movement, Lincoln subsequently made abolition a war aim. Having been clearly seen to be weakening the rebel Confederacy, in 1864, the Thirteenth Amendment of the US constitution was passed, abolishing slavery entirely. After victory over the Confederacy and ratification, it became effective 18th December 1865.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Though I am now ageing, which means I'm slowly dying, I much prefer this period of life to the vigour of youth, which I am having to watch Son go through - it's a time of struggle, fear and uncertainty, and though essential in building character, it can be an unpleasant, lonely and frightening experience. In this modern age, that struggle continues right through until your own children grow up.

It's a time where all manner of setbacks can frustrate your progress. There is nothing I can do to make his circumstances easier, only offer wisdom when it's asked for. It is up to him to develop himself the attitudes and behaviours that enable him to cope. Though I am here to help, this is only for when he cannot help himself. In the main I have to let him just get on with it and pursue my own self-development. I have however every confidence in him - if I can get to a place of joy, gratitude and happiness, I'm sure he, with all the extra support I never got, can do the same.

The Soviet Union was the first army to have paratroopers, which they exhibited in 1935. The British had none at all until 1940, when the Central Landing School opened near Manchester.
