1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

19th September 1356
BATTLE OF POITIERS
Edward The Black Prince of England inflicted a decisive defeat on the army of France, capturing the French king John II. This victory preserved English territories in France whilst France lapsed into a period of anarchy. John was eventually ransomed and in 1360 was forced to sign the Treaty Of Bretigny, which gave the English control of Gasconny and Aquitaine, amounting to around a third of France. There followed a period of nine years of peace before the French were ready to make war again under their new king Charles V

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
With Son away on sleepover, there's a certain lightness in the air that will result in unusual morning frolics. It's good for him and us to get a break. This is not because of dysfunctionality but rather because of the natural desire on his part to "build his own nest". This does unfortunately lead to resentment on his part which sours slightly the atmosphere in the house, which is noticeable when he's absent.

Missus of course wants to hang on to him for as long as possible, suppressing her own healthy libido for much of the week to avoid annoying him with the sounds of our passion. I find myself ambivalent - I value our relationship and his company when I get it but I also resent his resentment - I would rather he felt gratitude for parents very much together after many trials.

Of course all this is very natural and happens in many homes after children have grown to adults. As much as I like as well as love him, I am as ready as he is for him to go. I will miss him when that happens but there will be a lightness and freedom around the house that will more than compensate.

8. TRIVIA
Capuchins are skilled tool users. They smash nuts with rocks, insert branches into crevices to capture food, remove spines and hairs from caterpillars by rubbing them against a branch, protect their hands with leaves, and use large branches to club snakes.

9. ZEN WISDOM
As long as our spirit remains unbroken, there is no defeat. In life, inner defeatism always precedes actual defeat.
