3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Wedding Anniversary was a qualified success - Missus had a great day, and my culinary 3-course masterpiece was well-received. However, because I am o.k. in the morning but much less "effective" in the evening and the Little Blue Tablets are much less effective on a full stomach, "consummation" had to be postponed twice before I was finally in action. Fortunately, whilst very horny, missus is also the world's most understanding wife and was happy enough to get her bell rung eventually. West Ham United FC actually won away which helped the day along, and the only other minor fly-in-the-ointment was sulky self-pitying Son, who I had to banish for some parts of the day.

Notably less academically-gifted than his sister, Son is however a naturally-talented musician, and generally a joy to be around - most of the time. An area where he is a rather a pain is in his attitude to his parents healthy marriage, particularly his mother's rampant libido and other quirks. Rather than be happy for us and grateful that his parents are so "together", he finds the whole thing disgusting. To be fair, we are indiscreet, but his response, which can boil over into outright anger, is highly unwelcome - it is the only significant bone of contention between us.

Couple this natural hostility with our anniversary and at the same time finding out how inadequately academically qualified he is to get into University, and he is not a lot of fun - I had no choice but to impose space between us as Missus was priority this weekend.

I am relationship-wise more fortunate in that from his age I knew exactly what I wanted - romance! Son is emphatically straight like me but at the same time misogynistic - meaning that he has no idea what he wants! Career-wise the reverse is true - I had no idea until mid-life, whereas he is crystal-clear where he wants to go.

Though he does not poison the atmosphere like his sister did, and unlike her can be negotiated with, he is nevertheless at the time of life where having to co-habit in a place where he doesn't make the rules is starting to grate. This is all very normal and natural, but it does mean I have to proactively mediate between him and his mother, and that I need to be sensitive, supportive and willing to compromise.
