3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Oh dear. The Manchester trip was a complete disaster. It was a long shot to begin with, and not succeeding would have been acceptable in itself. However, Son was humiliated by his glaring deficiencies in music theory. The misery was then greatly compounded at the coach station. Due to poor signage and communication on the part of the coach station, and some naive complacency by myself, we had to watch our coach drive out without us, the driver ignoring my pleas to let us on.

Unfortunately the combination of being completely unprepared for this turn of events and my sensitivity to both injustice and failure caused me to completely lose it. Rather myself than supporting Son through a tough defeat, he was now having to cope with a Father out of his mind.

Sanity very gradually returned, and thankfully, the following departure two hours later led to a smooth journey home, but mutual awkward embarrassment and humiliation meant that it was a very uncomfortable journey indeed. We parted company awkwardly at home as Son retreated to his room to lick his wounded pride. Missus, bless her, returned from an evening out to offer nothing but sympathy and comfort.

It has been a long time since I felt so utterly defeated on a material, personal ans spiritual level - a complete epic fail! It is a moment for the healer to counsel himself. There are positives. My training did eventually kick in. Focusing on breathing, I re-grounded myself, and I did not exact vengeance upon the somewhat unhelpful staff, especially on the coach driver who stranded us, who happened to be at Bradford Interchange when we got there. My responsibility to loved ones overrode my deathwish. Also I have been able to introspect and reflect after the event.

The most painful aspect of the defeat is to have gone down in Son's estimation. However I can only be me - I am vulnerable and can be crushed by certain circumstances, but that doesn't make me worthless as a Father.

It is now important to respond to defeat in the best manner. As the Dalai Lama says: when you lose, do not lose the lesson. Having dropped to this particular square in the snakes and ladders game of life, it is from this square I need to move on from.
