8. TRIVIA
There is no universal agreement amongst historians as to why the Roman Empire fell. However, the most likely explanation is lack of resources. In 395 AD, the empire was divided into two halves. The Eastern half had much more resources and population and less territory to defend. It was not prepared to share its wealth with the West, which consequently no longer had the ability to defend itself against the barbarian hordes arriving at its' borders. 
The Western Roman Empire was consequently overrun and ceased to exist in 476 AD, whereas the Eastern Roman Empire, a.k.a. the Byzantine Empire, lasted almost a thousand years longer before being ended by the Turks in 1453.
