3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
If myself and Daughter hated each other, that at least would be simple and we'd know where we were. Similarly, and even better, if we both enjoyed each other's company, as is the case in my relationship with Son, that would be ideal. Unfortunately, the situation as it stands is neither and a recipe for ongoing heartache. We care deeply for each other but bring each other no joy. She can't stand my criticism and I can't stand her rudeness, selfishness, greed and lack of respect. But that doesn't add up to hatred, only a painful mutual disappointment.

For Son, it's simple - he has severed relations with his sister outright and has no interest in renewing them. I can't do that, even if I wanted to, while Missus lives. I remain interested in her progress, and she yearns for my approval. In terms of her academic performance, talents and abilities, I have pride and approval in abundance. My disapproval is solely in the way she treats and reacts to her nuclear family members.

I have tried a "fresh start" policy in which past hurts were forgiven, but unfortunately this only resulted in fresh ones. On a spiritual level, my dysfunctional relationship with Daughter has been an excellent test and proving ground. I have been stripped of any mawkish notions of love and forgiveness conquering all yet at the same time learned that love is eternal and indestructible.

The upshot of all this is a policy of "love from a safe distance" - keeping channels of communication open, providing aid indirectly as needed, but out of range of the torpedoes. I completely accept without resentment or lament how it is, and will do what I can from where I am indefinitely. For a closer relationship, Daughter must do the one thing she has so far refused to do - be kind rather than right. I'm prepared to accept the possibility that she may never do so.
