3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I finally got the housework done but then got involved in researching a new cable/satellite deal. After all that and after several days huffing and puffing, ranting and raging against Virgin Media for poor service, after a family discussion, we actually ended up upgrading our package with them!

Recent large bills, it transpires, were due to Missus calls to Daughter's mobile, so we went for a flat-rate all inclusive package to solve the problem, rather than take the chance of upheaval by switching to Sky. We will give it a few months and review the situation again.

In my temporal life I am in the blissful situation of almost zero stress, with no one on my back - potential antagonists have all been cast out, cut off, or at the Weekend Job, cowered to a comfortable distance. Missus, unlike most wives, almost never nags for stuff. My relationship with Son is my pride and joy, and Daughter, the biggest fly in the ointment, bothers me only in the form of traumatic memory.

Liberated from "firefighting" all day, There is time aplenty to live life and enjoy my little bubble of paradise. My training teaches me not to cling to it, but simply be grateful for the experience, for all things must pass. The only thing that will remain so long as consciousness remains is the joy of having made a difference.

8. TRIVIA
Bubonic Plague, the catastrophic "Black Death" of medieval times, is a bacterial infection passed on from the bites of infected rat fleas. The bacteria migrate to the Lymph nodes and multiply rapidly, forming painful black growths called buboes.

In modern civilisation it is almost impossible for such a plague to occur. However plagues themselves remain a threat, particularly from any newly-evolved aggressive airbourne virus.

Viruses and bacteria, no matter how virulent, almost never eradicate an entire species because there are always a few individuals with a natural resistance. These individuals will survive and multiply, restoring the species fairly rapidly.

Evolution tends to favour viruses and bacteria that cause only mild or no symptoms, because since they don't kill their host, they are much more easily spread. A notable exception was the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. Highly virulent, it spread rapidly because of the First World War, where large numbers of people were gathered together and on the move. It killed many more people than the war itself.
