3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Yesterday saw my first lengthy meditation in quite a while, and after a generally successful Thursday, there has been a return to spiritual discipline. I now fully understand the need to minimize random thought, and also to keep awareness on the Higher Self.

I find the analogy of a tree useful in spiritual discipline. Imagine a tree, analagous to the Universe, with consciousness. Because consciousness can clump into nodes of awareness, a specific leaf, analagous to your ego, develops self-awareness. The leaf then perceives itself as a separate being amongst many others with who it must compete for light and will ultimately die and fall from the tree. This makes the leaf lonely, aggressive and frightened.

At some point however, the consciousness within the leaf realizes that it is actually the tree, which has simply become concentrated in the leaf. The leaf is in reality only the tree's disposable tool. When the leaf has served its purpose, the consciousness within it simply withdraws back into the tree. The consciousness within the leaf can now relax and use the leaf body for the best interest of the tree. However, it needs to keep focused on the tree to prevent it forgetting what it is.

I have learned that spiritual discipline is not a natural default, so has to be maintained daily in the same way cleanliness is not a natural default. Spiritual focus keeps your consciousness "clean" and clear of rubbish that inhibits and at worse incapacitates it.
